How to Make Text Bigger in Safari (iPhone, iPad & Mac)
Every way to enlarge text in Safari: page zoom, Reader, Mac minimum font size and extensions, with the trade-offs of each so you can pick the right one.
Small web text is one of the most common reasons people squint at their phone. Safari has several ways to fix it, but they don’t all work the same way, and some of the obvious ones don’t affect websites at all. Here’s every option, from quickest to most thorough.
Zoom vs. text size: know the difference
- Zoom makes the whole page bigger, including images, menus and layout. On a phone, a zoomed page often gets wider than the screen and you scroll sideways.
- Text size makes only the words bigger and lets them re-wrap to fit, so you keep scrolling in one direction.
Safari’s built-in tools on iPhone are zoom tools. The only way to change text size alone on every site is an extension, covered below.
iPhone and iPad
Zoom one website
- Open the website in Safari.
- Tap the page menu button on the left of the address bar.
- Tap the large A to zoom in, up to 300%. Tap the percentage to reset.
Safari remembers this for that website.
Zoom every website
Open Settings › Apps › Safari › Page Zoom and choose a default percentage. Sites you’ve set individually keep their own zoom.
Reader view
For articles, tap the page menu button and choose Show Reader. Tap the button again to change text size, font and background. Reader only works on article-style pages.
Settings that don’t affect most websites
- Settings › Display & Brightness › Text Size and Accessibility › Display & Text Size › Larger Text change text in apps, but most websites set fixed sizes, so Safari pages barely change.
- Accessibility › Zoom magnifies the whole screen with a three-finger double tap. It’s useful for a quick look but tiring for reading long pages.
Mac
Zoom
Press Command (⌘) and + to zoom in and ⌘ and − to zoom out, or use the View menu. Choose View › Zoom Text Only first if you want only the text to grow.
To set a default, open Safari › Settings › Websites › Page Zoom.
Minimum font size
The Mac has a setting iPhone lacks:
- Open Safari › Settings › Advanced.
- Tick Never use font sizes smaller than and choose a size.
Any text smaller than your choice grows to match. Larger headings stay as they are.
Every device: a minimum text size with FontFlex
A minimum text size is the most comfortable fix: small text grows, big text is left alone, and the layout still fits your screen. The Mac has it built in, but iPhone and iPad don’t.
FontFlex adds it to Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac:
- Install FontFlex and turn it on in Settings › Apps › Safari › Extensions.
- In the app, set the text size you want.
- Every website now uses at least that size. No zooming, no sideways scrolling.
Bigger isn’t everything
If text is still hard to read after you enlarge it, the problem may be the font or spacing, not the size:
- Thin or light fonts stay hard to read at any size. Switch to a heavier, clearer font, or increase font weight. See how to change the font in Safari.
- Tight line spacing makes big text feel cramped. Aim for about 1.5 times the text size. Our spacing guide explains why.
- Low contrast (grey on white) needs darker text or a softer background. See colors for easier reading.
